Accessibility Statement
Last updated: June 2026
Accessibility is not an afterthought for The Gijima Foundation — it is central to who we are. Our mission is disability inclusion. Our website must reflect that.
Our commitment
The Gijima Foundation is committed to ensuring that this website is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
What we have done
- All pages include a visible "Skip to main content" link for keyboard users
- All images have descriptive alternative text
- Colour contrast meets WCAG AA minimums (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text)
- All interactive elements are keyboard-navigable with visible focus indicators
- Navigation menus are accessible via keyboard including dropdown items
- Page structure uses proper semantic HTML and ARIA landmark roles
- Heading hierarchy is logical and consistent throughout
- Links are descriptive (no "click here" or bare URLs)
- External links are labelled as opening in a new tab
- Forms (where present) include labels associated with each field
- The site does not use auto-playing audio or video
- Text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality
Known limitations
We are aware of the following areas where accessibility may be limited:
- Some older photo captions may be brief. We are working to improve these.
- Third-party embedded content (such as social media feeds or linked YouTube videos) may not fully conform to WCAG 2.1 AA. We have no control over external content.
- Some downloadable documents (PDF) may not be fully accessible. Please contact us if you need an accessible format.
Feedback and contact
We welcome feedback on the accessibility of this website. If you experience barriers or need information in an alternative format, please contact us:
- Email: admin@gijimafoundation.co.za
We aim to respond to accessibility feedback within 10 business days.
Technical specifications
This website relies on the following technologies for conformance:
- HTML5
- CSS3
- JavaScript (progressive enhancement only — core content is available without JS)
- WAI-ARIA (where needed)
The site has been tested with keyboard navigation and reviewed against WCAG 2.1 AA criteria during build. Screen reader testing with NVDA (Windows) is planned before final launch.
Enforcement procedure
If you are not satisfied with our response to your accessibility complaint, you may contact the relevant authority in your country. In South Africa, this may include the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) at www.sahrc.org.za.
